Braces for Kids

Early evaluation and treatment can make a big difference. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends children see an orthodontist by age 7.

Why Age 7?

By age 7, most children have a mix of baby teeth and adult teeth. This allows Dr. Graf to evaluate jaw development, tooth eruption patterns, and identify potential problems early — when they're often easier to correct.

An early evaluation doesn't mean early treatment. In many cases, we simply monitor growth and recommend the optimal time to begin treatment when most or all of the permanent teeth have erupted.

Signs Your Child May Need an Orthodontic Evaluation

  • Early or late loss of baby teeth
  • Difficulty chewing or biting
  • Mouth breathing
  • Thumb or finger sucking past age 5
  • Crowded, misplaced, or blocked teeth
  • Jaws that shift, make sounds, or are disproportionate
  • Speech difficulties
  • Teeth that don't meet properly or at all
  • A severe underbite or severely protruding front teeth.

Phase 1 (Early) Treatment

When early treatment is recommended, it's typically to:

  • Guide jaw growth and development
  • Create space for crowded teeth
  • Correct harmful oral habits
  • Reduce the risk of trauma to protruding teeth
  • Improve appearance and self-esteem
  • Simplify later treatment (Phase 2)

Treatment Options for Kids

Traditional Braces

Time-tested and effective. Modern braces are smaller and more comfortable than ever. Kids can choose fun colored bands! Phase I treatment can often be accomplished in 8-10 months with braces.

Orthopedic appliances to guide jaw growth

At the age of 7-9 your child presents with optimal potential to modify growth of the upper jaw through the use of a facemask. This is best for patients that have a protruding lower jaw often accompanied by a cross bite of the front teeth (underbite). Results of facemask treatment can be substantial and reduce complications down the road.

Palatal Expanders

Gently widen the upper jaw to correct crossbites and create space for crowded teeth. Studies show that expansion performed at an earlier age directly affects the long term stability of skeletal expansion. At Graf Orthodontics we strive to create broad smiles and expanding skeletally is an effective way to do this.

Space Maintainers

Hold space for permanent teeth after early loss of baby teeth. Did you know that the primary molars are significantly larger compared to the premolar teeth which replace them? Using this extra space resolves crowding at an early age which sets a patient up for success during phase II treatment.
